Caustic – American Carrion (2018)
Admittedly, whilst I partook in the Kickstarter campaign for 2015’s Industrial Music album, I missed the boat regarding the campaign for Caustic’s brand new album, American Carrion. Nevertheless, I still hold my signed copy of that fine 2015 album close to my
man junk heart. Far surpassing its original monetary goal in only 36 hours, this latest campaign, an outright success, has led to, objectively, a really successful album.
I just love seeing an artist go from strength to strength and American Carrion is a prime example of that. Industrial Music was a firm step in the right direction for Matt Fanale; this new album takes all the best parts of that album, refines them further and also expands upon Caustic’s musical arsenal with a dilatant sonic palette that tastes absolutely sublime. There’s a fantastic feel and flow to American Carrion – it plays like it should be listened to in one go, yet each song individually is also incredibly strong. Many artists fail to reach this level of succession, yet with American Carrion, Caustic’s electronic-punk aesthetic, EBM grooves and post-industrial textures all work perfectly in unison.
Previous single “The Coital Staircase” is just one angle whereby we see an added musical maturity to Caustic. An almost 9 minute opus built around a consistent techno beat, voice samples, strings and emotive electronica. Perhaps a fitting tribute to legends Coil, the song itself is truly magnificent. And the magnificence continues with a deliciously chunky bassline constructed into “Drugskill”. Its huge and unleashes streams of serotonin in the brain. Better than drugs.
Caustic’s punk aesthetic is far from absent on the more mature American Carrion; its plentifully present yet honed more precisely. Album opener “Purgative” is effectively quintessential Caustic; primal industrial – hard beats, energetic bassline and bile-laden vocals. Elsewhere, tracks like “Heads Down, Fingers Up” and “Fuck That Fascist Beat” continue to convey Matt Fanale’s vitriol on what is a decisively political album.
Released via Negative Gain Productions on 1st January, it hasn’t taken long for a great album to arrive in 2018. American Carrion is rivethead gloriousness. Very highly recommended.
