Blush Response – Human Augmentation EP (2017)
Joey Blush is one of the most prolific producers currently around in the underground electronic spectrum. It’s almost becoming increasing difficult to keep track of the hectic Blush Response release schedule, as well side projects such as Konkurs with Sarin. Nevertheless, here’s the Human Augmentation EP, released via Adam X’s Sonic Groove Records label. The fact that Adam X has picked up on this, should not only give you a hint as to the sound direction, but also the quality.
On a personal note, I’ve always been most drawn to Blush Response’s more industrial albums, with Tension Strategies and Desire Machines both being favourites of mine. However, ever since the project’s relocation to Berlin, there has been a much heavier techno angle to the sound. That trend continues even further, and with impressive results, on Human Augmentation.
Featuring extensive modular synthesis sound design, Human Augmentation’s propulsive techno groove is slightly more minimalist than previous Blush Response outings. The sound and energy here compliment Blush’s cyperpunk aesthetic quite well, and while the techno element is strong, it doesn’t overpower the dark atmosphere of these tunes, meaning most alternative dancefloors will find themselves banging their heads to tracks off this EP. “Unclean Spirit” is the highlight of Human Augmentation for me, its stabs of distorted sounds dispersed throughout bring an added edge to an already heavy electronic track.
